By now, the cottage was out of sight, and they were well on their way down Route 1. Some time after his mortification wore off, Samson had taken the starter kit back from Zan. Due to protests at having his load lightened, they compromised, resulting in two bags half-full of Samson's clothes. Despite his size, the little Pancham was pretty strong - though, carrying things bigger than him would obviously be a problem no matter what. Samson carried the larger bag issued by the professor, which contained all the items like pokeballs and potions.
It was his first time with his own personal pokedex as well. They had them back at the academy, but they were all standard-issue and used in class only. He wasn't one of the fancier kids with their own, newer model, either - he had to learn how to use its other functions from scratch. Testing it out, it looked like he couldn't just point at a pokemon off in the distance and hope it got recorded. They would probably have to legitimately encounter them up close.
Speaking of which, Zan already looked ready for a fight. They had just left the lab, but he wanted to show off his moves as soon as possible - though he really only knew two. It would probably take more than brute force to tackle their first few challenges, but they wouldn't know until one presented itself. Either way, they had plenty of time to get used to each others' company - the next town was still quite a ways away.
