appearance
The Chandler kids are a bunch who inherited all the right genes from their beauty-and-brains mother and father. Those attractive traits didn't spread evenly, however, for Grace was arguably the plainest of the five. Grace, unsurprisingly, is the tiniest of the group, a petite girl but not exactly thin, as her frame is rounded with soft curves. It would be safe to say a very small percentage is actually muscle. While not chubby, her body wouldn't be considered a model's, and she could always lose a little thickness around the thighs, but Grace loves her junk food and candy too much to give them up for the no-fun healthy regimen. Despite very sporadic workouts, her tummy is flat—her calories prefer to settle in her thighs—and woefully, so is her chest, though it has been growing some as of late. But c'mon, the eighteen-year-old is running out of her growing time.
Like her siblings, her skin is a creamy color that has gotten almost permanently sun-kissed throughout the years. Locks of mousey brown hair cascade past her shoulders, usually trimmed to mid-back. Her hair is naturally a tad curly, though luckily for her, on good days, it's gotten to stay decently straight without the assistance of heat. Highlights in her hair come and go, and Grace varies her hairdo often, wearing it up, in curls, in braids, all changing at her whim. When she does leave it down, her tresses gracefully frame the round, soft face of Grace Chandler. Those baby cheeks, always raised in a goofy smile, are tinted with a natural blush and a smattering of very faint freckles. Her face starts with a pair of well-kept, gently-arching eyebrows and ends into a soft jawline and chin. From her almond-shaped hazels, to the tiny straight nose, to the small, smiling lips, everything about Grace's facial appearance is nice, but nothing spectacular. Except for those eyebrows. Even she likes her eyebrows.
However, her most striking feature, probably of her entire physical appearance, is her smile. Even though her teeth aren't the perfect shade of ivory and she never had them straightened through means of a long relationship with a certain unpleasant device in her mouth, Grace has a dazzling, genuine smile. When she flashes those pearly whites, her cheeks lift, and her eyes wrinkle around the sides and glitter with something close to laughter.
Grace's dress is, in general, very casual. She dresses mostly for comfort and then for style if it doesn't take too much more effort. Her usual attire is a t-shirt or racerback tank and shorts, the athletic ones favored over the denim. Her favorite footwear is a tie between a pair of black converse and a pair of strappy hiking sandals. Then there are days Grace is up for a little beautification and adorns herself in all the pretty, pastels, and frills, and pretty much dresses like she has more money than she actually does.

personality
CHILDLIKE the best, Grace is a simple-minded, fun-loving girl who really really really enjoys minding the simple things and loving fun. The worst, Grace is a simple-minded, fun-loving girl who's trying too hard, too annoyingly to relive her childhood and needs to act her age a little. Whatever your take on this childish quirk of hers is, it's not going to stop her from climbing up the playground to shimmy down the slide whilst the little kids watch this giant intrude in their play area. Grace is not all that impressed with the idea of growing up, and she puts in quite the effort to hinder that process. The result is this young adult who sometimes act a little immature for her age. It can be funny and contagious. It can also be annoying and provoke questioning of possible head accidents when she was a baby.
SWEET aside for her questionable maturity, Grace is also known as being a sweetheart. She's got a huge heart and a natural instinct to comfort those who are down. She wants to be everybody's friend, and even though this is impossible, she tries anyway. Grace has a genuine concern over other people's well-being, and sometimes strive to put their happiness before hers. She offers more than she receives, and this leaves her vulnerable to being walked over. Some have taken advantage of her compassionate nature, even if unintentionally, but it's okay. She always claims that other people being happy makes her happy.
AWKWARD once she gets comfortable around you enough to shed some of her sugary sweet and put-together exterior, Grace is actually a bit of a socially-awkward weirdo. She's naturally a sweetheart, but Grace isn't truly herself until she's a little clumsy, a bit eccentric, a whole lot awkward, and despite her name, kind of graceless. This goes hand-in-hand very well with her childlike personality. The stuff that comes out of her mouth are funnily innocent and strange and random. Her childish perception picks up things like the ice cream truck and that leaf that's shaped like a bear and then she proudly announces it to the world. Grace is prone to finding very normal things, and very bad jokes, funny. The worst of it is when she's attempting to be mean. Sure, Grace can be snarky and sarcastic when she's up to it, but especially when it's in a joking manner, it comes off as really awkward banter.
EASYGOING Grace is very much one who approaches life with a relaxed and carefree attitude. She reserves worry for the serious, important matters. All those other trivial stuff, whatever happens happen and she'll just go with it. Grace moves along at her own pace and is totally happy doing her own thing. This does border on procrastination and laziness, so she ends up doing some massive rushing and stressing in the end, but that's how she rolls with the flow, and she's not planning to change that behavior anytime soon. Her laid-back manner also applies to social situations. Grace is pretty easy to get along with, doesn't take all things seriously, and is open to friendly interaction from all sorts of social circles. She avoids confrontation at all costs and reluctantly resorts to them when it's the only viable option. It would take quite a lot to get her upset or flustered, especially if it's over something insignificant, and if she does, Grace isn't one to hold a grudge. Her easygoing nature does tend to be confused with being a doormat.
INSECURE we're talking very closeted insecurity here. Grace is a girl who acts and looks confident, says that she doesn't give a care about what anyone else says or thinks, but deep deep deep down, in the darkest depths of her soul, she knows that a shred of insecurity very much exists. She acts and looks confident not to deceive others, but to convince herself. Grace isn't one to take everything as a personal attack against her, but when that criticism is thrown at her, she obsesses over it, spending an unhealthy amount of time worrying and beating herself over it. Grace does secretly doubt her abilities, and when she makes a mistake, no matter how tiny it might've seem to everyone but her, she reads into it like a good novel. So she opts to not focus on things too much, though she is a little oblivious for the most part anyway, and that cluelessness is usually her first line of defense. Grace wants to be everybody's sweetheart friend, but when the feeling's not mutual, yes, that hurts. Secretly.

history
Despite existing in a world with Pokemon, Grace lived a life very much separated from them. The Chandler clan, a pair of engineers and their five children—Matthias, Sarah, Andrew, Jeremy, and Grace—, hailed from Cherrygrove City in Johto. At the time of her birth, Stephen Chandler was an environmental engineer who'd recently begun starting up his career, and his wife, Elizabeth, had been working in the chemical engineering field. Grace would be their last child, and before she had learned how to talk, the family moved cross country to the city of Olivine where a bigger job opportunity for Stephan awaited him. The larger port city with its more prominent use of the ocean provided better prospects for his career, and Liza was in full support for his success. For the entirety of her toddler years, Grace's mother stayed at home to care for her and make sure the other children went to school.
Sounds painfully boring, right? Well that's pretty accurate to say the least. The Chandlers were the very normal of civilians, and their lives were way out of the Pokemon spectrum. The only Pokemon Grace saw more than a passing glimpse of is her father's partner for his work, a Golduck who was too grumpy to play with anyway. The adults didn't even consider a Pokemon as a household companion, what with all the kids running around. Pretty soon Grace was old enough to go to school herself—the very traditional school, math, science, social studies, etc—, and not long after, their mother found a job as well. But even though now both parents were busy with their work, they never ceased their emphasis on education, because both Stephen and Liza wanted to nurture the children to develop a successful career path much like theirs. They wanted their kids to grow up to do something a bit more meaningful for themselves and for society than catch Pokemon to beat up other Pokemon all for, in their eyes, some overrated validation. Nope, their children were not going to waste their life doing such a thing.
So the kids went to school. They were still in school when some of their classmates disappeared to "go on a long trip" and never returned. And still they went. Sometime during Grace's elementary years, the family uprooted once more and shifted up north to a different region entirely, Sunyshore City in Sinnoh. There, both Stephen and Elizabeth found superior jobs to proceed their careers. The five children were, more or less, some of the top students for their respective years despite the move. However, being the last of a crowd of kids, Grace found the "youngest child" loopholes and exploited them. As a result, she started to deviate personality-wise from her siblings at a pretty early age. Grace was much more carefree, much more spontaneous, and much more lazy. She lacked drive in her studies and were below the average of her siblings in schooling. But her parents didn't have the time nor will to address her shenanigans right then, because the elder siblings were preparing for post-secondary education. One by one the Chandler kids left the nest until it was only Jeremy and Grace around, both in high school by now, and that's when she fully experienced the crazy parents.
If high school wasn't stressful enough, her parents, especially critical, stern dad, always seemed to find time out of their busy work schedule to pressure her to do better. They hired tutors when her grades dropped a little and grounded her from social events when her marks weren't perfect A's. Grace, more or less, failed to follow in her siblings' ambitious footsteps that led to where she had no passion for. In the midst of her shortcomings, she discovered the emotionally-abusive side of an overworked and exhausted Stephen. Whatever scraps of a good relationship between her and her father existed were now thoroughly shredded and burned. Her mom only half-heartedly stood up for her, for she too was disappointed in her daughter's missteps, and older brother Jeremy could only look on in sympathy and console his baby sister behind closed doors; he was very familiar with this Stephen and did not wish to turn the abuse on him. When he, too, eventually took his leave for college, Grace was down to two more years, and the family situation only got worse because now, all attention was focused on her.
Her high school years didn't turn out to be all that bad, however. Those eight-hour five-days-a-week away from the angst at home were the greatest times of her life. Grace hid her personal troubles and tackled high school with her positive, carefree attitude and made what some call "the worst years of their life" some of her best. She wasn't the most popular, the prettiest, nor the smartest, but she was well-liked, and she surrounded herself with a positive, wholesome group of friends who were her joy in this low valley of her life.
There might've also been this boy. And this boy was charming and sweet and witty, and the infatuation was very real because it took her almost four years to pluck up the courage to have a conversation longer than two words with him. The heroine and her man of interest, in their last year of school together, did end up becoming friends, not the best of friends, but Grace gladly took what she got. And on whatever high pedestal she, in her state of speechless admiration, put him on, he absolutely deserved it. Or maybe he didn't, and Grace hadn't shaken off the blindness yet. But in her eyes, he was worth every single one of her stolen glances. He was a beautiful pianist and saxophonist and one of those smarties who sleep through every period but manage to emerge at the top of their class. And because of him, Grace has been to every single JV soccer game.. To support the whole team, of course. But it wasn't until they started talking when Grace found something fascinatingly shocking about her boy: David had Pokemon.
Just one Pokemon, to be precise, but just one had her complete interest. His Pokemon friend was a pleasant, gentleman of a Buizel named Porter, and he was to accompany his owner on an epic travel after graduation. Grace was absolutely enthralled. Never before had she been this close with a magnificent creature such as a Pokemon, and now she had more than one reason to hang out with her man friend out of school hours. And there was still the case with his future plans as a Pokemon trainer! The two bonded further as David enthusiastically told her of his approaching journey and of Pokemon as he's experienced them so far, and Grace listened with rapt attention. Shortly after graduating, he would board a ship headed to a Caspian Region. There, with the help of Porter, he would build a team of Pokemon to assist him in claiming victory over certified trainers with the ultimate goal of making it as far as the League, where even stronger trainers awaited him. The passion and enthusiasm he spoke with ignited a flame in his human companion, and Grace realized her calling.
During what's left of their high school years, her friendship with the boy continued to thrive, though nothing beyond platonic was brought to the surface, and Grace was okay with that. His friendship alone had given her so much anyway. Those last months flew by and graduation was soon upon them. Unfortunately for Grace, life-changing epiphany or no, her post-graduate plans were already laid out for her. There was a university in Canalave City with her name on its incoming freshmen roster, and Grace was sternly expected to make something of her college education. After heartfelt goodbyes, Grace wistfully watched her friend disappear into the ocean's horizon. Summer came and went, at times too slowly, at times too quickly, and the fall season came to be and that meant back to school. Same thing, different place.
Grace didn't last even a week. On the third day of classes, Grace Chandler was absent from 9am bio lab because she spent the morning packing, and by noon, she was in a cab heading off campus to the harbor. Before dinner time, and forking out the entirety of her first month's allowance, the same Grace Chandler was safely tucked onboard a ferry, destination: the much talked about Caspian Region. Sometimes, when something just feels right, you gotta go for it. She'll deal with the parents when it came to it.
