appearance
Years of labor has shaped up the once-gangly boy; Toby is now muscled and bulky, thus destroying any chance of him disappearing from attention, much to his displeasure. Though his arms are hefty and bundled with impressive muscles, the gentleness of his touch might surprise most people. Since he's working frequently with Pokemon, some of considerable size and some a little more fragile, Toby has developed a habit of keeping his true strength suppressed. Nevertheless, the imposing limbs and large hands and calloused fingers can still look intimidating.
A scruffy mop of chestnut brown hair rests on his head and frames the side of his face as thick sideburns, the result of not nearly being treated to as many haircuts as it could have. Though Toby does have an unruly head of hair, he has a habit of keeping his facial hair cared for better. The worst on given good day is a bit of stubble on his defined chin. His eyes are a dark, solemn brown deep-setted into his rugged face, and his nose sternly straight. Toby's face is almost permanently a dark hue from all his time outside, and on his body, he proudly sports a farmer tan of sorts. And though he rarely gives them out anymore, Toby has a crooked, toothy smile, and it was a habit of his to press his tongue against the gaps in his teeth.
Toby dresses comfortably and practically for his job, and since he's usually at his job, he usually dresses so. This includes worn, stained shirts and simple trousers. The man hasn't completely grasped color-coordination, and frankly doesn't care, so he typically hobbles around in mismatched clothes. His closet is quite sparse, so he ends up wearing most of his articles within the same week. Buttons are missing and hems are worn. The wrinkly, shabby things were, fortunately, made to last, so Toby has no need to shop for more. He owns exactly one pair of working boots, a nice, muddy brown color in the similar worn condition of his attire, and one pair of canvas shoes for around-the-house use.

personality
TACITURN a man of very few words, Toby prefers to do than talk. He was the socially-awkward, quiet introvert growing up, and even as an adult, it seems he still hasn't shed that. In fact, Toby has totally accepted it and made himself comfortable in his shell. Though now, he isn't shy as much as he doesn't put much effort into engaging in conversation. He lets his actions do all the talking. When in situation where verbal communication is inevitable or required of him, you can expect mostly gruff one-word mumbling and lots of grunting. Toby keeps to himself and is highly aversive to crowds, though he does come out a bit more in one-on-one interactions. He's not particularly unpleasant to be around, though his comfortable silence could be uncomfortable for the other parties.
GENTLE on the exterior, Toby is a coarse, passive man. In the chewy interior, he is a teddy bear. Despite his initial impression and physical appearance, Toby is a softie who doesn't like violence, though few have ever really seen this side of him. Most are pushed away with all his grunting and drawn-out silences, and even if they did manage to stay longer than that, he was rarely ever interested to swap stories and open himself up. Toby has a weak spot for two things: Pokemon, and children. Pokemon because they are simple creatures who don't try fit into any social standards or go on and on with chatter, at least not in any language he knew, and children because they are the very innocent, untouched by society.. for now. And being a father was the greatest thing in the world. It's with Pokemon and children that Toby opens up the gooey, soft side of him, an affectionate heavy-weight who seemed to laugh with his whole body.
BLUNT though Toby isn't one to say much, when he does, he is honest and to the point. He tramples straight into the bush and speaks his mind without a filter. This is a glaringly obvious side effect of his social-awkwardness. Toby doesn't see it as such a bad thing though; people's and his time is too valuable to be wasting on sugar-coated half-truths. He's poor with picking up social cues, and his blunt statements have resulted in hurt feelings, angry retaliation, awkward tensions, and disbelieving offense. And being the guy he is, Toby either doesn't notice the change in atmosphere or does, but has no idea how to fix it. But no worries. He doesn't talk enough for this to be a common thing. Even so, Toby can still be judgmental without talking, so when he sees something that is worth the effort, he is very explicit with his mental judgement.
DREAMY since he doesn't talk much, it would make sense that he thinks a lot, right? Very much correct. Toby has lots of time on his hands to contemplate on things, and his thoughts are usually loud enough to fill a silence in reality for him. So that's probably why long stretches of uncomfortable quiet doesn't faze him; he's not even paying attention to it. Toby dedicates a good portion of this mental activity to daydream. Yeah, it sounds a little mismatched for a heavy-set, scruffy guy like him. But Toby has mastered the practice of doing his work, whether it be menial tasks or hard labor, and reflecting simultaneously without being too absent-minded in the real world. This one's got quite a bit of baggage, and that provides ample material for him to mull over, since he's not too busy engaging with other human beings.

history
The product of a careless one night stand, Tobias Hunt was conceived out of wedlock. His parents, cavalier young adults barely out of their teenage years, weren't the type of people to settle down so quickly at the time, but both decided, against their families' wishes, to elope before he was born. Their decision to pursue parenthood meant well but maybe wasn't the best choice for the kid. Rory Hunt had no desire for a child, and Annie Miller-Hunt preferred a girl.
Toby's father flew around the world, roping in rare and valuable Pokemon for his clients: rich, upper-class folks who don't like to get their hands dirty with catching Pokemon. He was away more than he was home, so that left Annie to care for Toby as a stay-at-home. Despite his undesirable gender, his mother still loved him and coddled him. They lived very comfortably with Rory's fat paychecks. Toby, however, didn't live up to her illusion of her perfect child. Aside from being the wrong gender, Toby was a weird, lonely kid who didn't fit in. He didn't have many friends and acted a lot older than his age. His mother couldn't relate, oftentimes frustrated with his lack of popularity among his peers.
She sent him off to a Pokemon boarding school as soon as she could and spent her abundant free time going out and partying with friends. When Toby came home years later, fifteen-years-old and even more solemn than ever, Rory had found another girl in some other far off land, his childhood home had been mortgaged off, and Annie was freeloading from couch to couch. A childhood friend from school and her family took him in out of charity, and even though they were never close before, they got so in this time. They eventually grew into something more and her parents approved. At seventeen years, Tobias left Abigail and her family to pursue an ambition of his: Pokemon training.
After winning his first badge, more confident in his dream than ever, Toby received a call from Abigail with big news. She was pregnant and though she would carry the child to full term, she didn't want to keep it. Toby disagreed and planned to return. She implored him to continue his journey until it was time, and then they'll discuss it, and Toby reluctantly did. He was just shy of his second to final badge when the birthdate loomed close and made his way home. Abigail bore a baby girl whom they named Mia. The mother was swayed to keep the child, and everything was perfect until it was discovered that Mia had major damage to her brain. Not only was the mother was too immature to have all the right nutrients in her body for the developing fetus, it turns out Abigail had been neglecting her prenatals and heavily drinking with the baby in her womb. The girl would never get the chance to grow up normally.
This was enough to convince Abigail to leave the baby at the church's doorstep. She encouraged Toby to pick up his Pokemon training again. Toby would have none of that and gave up his dream to raise his daughter. Abigail was the unwilling parent along for the ride until she left them a year later. Toby was barely fazed. Raising a handicapped kid was difficult in some areas, but in terms of his unconditional love for her, that not difficult for him. Toby took up a job within a construction company to pay off living expenses for the both of them. Mia's constant need for treatments and special commodities forced them into a state of constant debt. But he persisted and worked on, fueled by his desire to provide the best for his kid.
Toby strived to be like a parent he never really had. Mia was his world, and there was nothing he wouldn't do for her. Even if she was mentally sick and had problems acclimating into society because of it, Toby did his best for her, and Mia brought out the best in the once-stoic man. To aid him in this task, he enlisted the help of a friend he met on his brief adventure, a Wigglytuff with a personality very much opposite of Toby's. Bonnie the Wigglytuff was a favorite of Mia's and the normally mischievous puffball sported a maternal, gentle personality around the little girl and helped Toby care for her.
So Wigglytuff became Mia's nanny when Toby was out working. Then one evening, Toby receives call assigning him to a contract at Professor Oak's laboratory. And that's when he was first exposed to working with Pokemon outside of training them. The job had him expanding Oak's building for a few months where he bonded with the Pokemon living there, and he found himself drawn to working with Pokemon again. When Mia was twelve, her father gratefully accepted a position at the laboratory. His job was maintenance, landscaping, and various laborious work around the property, but that gave him an opportunity to be around the Pokemon, whom he eventually started to care for part-time.
Nothing, besides the birth of his child, made him happier than being promoted to a full-time caretaker at the lab. This fortunate event was overshadowed with some very bad news. Mia, now sixteen, had gotten sicker. The treatments he scrimped and saved for stopped working. The child went completely brain-dead, and Toby cried himself to sleep for a week. Some medications took her pain away, but the girl was now nothing more than a vegetable. Toby could only surface from his grief long enough to ask the doctors to pull the plug. The man retreated from society with only the company of his grieving Wigglytuff. Oak pardoned him from his work as long as possible until he caring hands were needed for the Pokemon again.
Time with the Pokemon offered him a respite, so Toby poured all his energies into his job. But once he left the sanctuary of the laboratory, the pain of his loss tormented him, every single day. Years pass, The Professor, seeing the man's potential with the creatures but also seeing the grief associated with the place, arranged for his transfer to another region where he can escape and find better opportunities in his work. This region was very new, and very undermanned, and many positions were open. Toby wouldn't be out of a job anytime soon in Caspian. He packed his bags and boarded a ship off for the island with only Bonnie in tow. The two have bonded immensely through Mia and the tragedy. They do make a lopsided pair, one gruff, introverted man and a pink, furry bundle of bouncing enthusiasm. Toby now occupies his time tending to the Gaia Ranch Pokemon. The man once again donned his silent, hermit personality in this new environment.
Unfortunately, his job description also included "assisting new trainers, coordinators, breeders, etc in their beginning steps," so he can't hide away with his Pokemon yet. Bonnie manages the front of this aspect of his job at times, something she's all too happy to do. The playful, boisterous fluffball loves meeting and pranking the incoming amateurs. Meanwhile, Toby is found contently out in the fields most hours of the day, until he's called to the front to help the kiddos. This part of his job agonizes him because he's constantly seeing these kids that have an opportunity that his daughter has never and will never have. And he hates it.
