On Our Own
Humans have eradicated themselves with Nuclear war. Along with them, large animals that need large amounts of food died off and became extinct. Smaller animals, like mice and birds, began an overtaking. As the larger, more needy predators died off, large prey thrived off the resulting growth in numbers. However, as soon as the numbers hit record heights, it began to drop off. Prey was eating itself out of house and home, and eventually they went extinct as well. Plant eaters like mice, and small meat-eaters like lizards, were free to roam the planet with no worry of there being a predator that could step on them too badly.

However, there was an empty space where Man used to be. Something- someone- had to take up the challenge of becoming intelligent. Something had to fill that void- But it had to be something close to Man. Creatures that had been beside them for millions on millions of years, but were never given a chance.

Cats.

The first step was the skill of walking on their hind legs. This art kept their forepaws free to become more and more dexterous. They discovered how to hold things, using their dewclaws as "thumbs" of sorts. Then, one day, one magnificent cat came up with the idea of controlling their worst enemy- Fire.

After the discovery of fire, the intelligence rate boomed. Dull eyes became fiery balls of light and experience, and a language was born. Written language and art came next. Then, finally agriculture and home-building. The transformation was complete. Cats had fully inherited the earth.
